Safe Anchor Trust is a registered charity and was established in 1995.
Their aim is to provide enjoyable, safe and therapeutic boat trips for those in our community who are disadvantaged through physical or mental disabilities, social isolation, age or social deprivation. They are fortunate to be able to cruise on one of the country’s most picturesque and interesting waterways, while travelling in “canal time” provides a quiet and calming experience for our passengers. Supported by the Canal & River Trust, we also help to maintain our local waterways and surrounding environment.
Trips are tailored to meet individual needs with the overall duration being determined by each group.
They offer our service free of charge to community groups and are proud that all their operations are carried out by unpaid volunteers. They do survive on donations, which are very gratefully received, and are used entirely to cover the running costs and maintenance of the boats. All funds raised from Ticket Prices from Little Hiccups will go directly to the Safe Anchor Trust as a donation.
There are 5 boats in our fleet including 2 broad beam boats specially designed for wheelchair users or passengers with mobility difficulties. Each boat, by law, can carry a maximum of 12 passengers with larger groups being accommodated on additional boats. All boats have toilets. Little Hiccups will be on the following boats:
E Austen Johnson – Maximum number of passengers – 10
A 46 foot broad beam boat specially adapted for wheelchair users and individuals with mobility difficulties. The boat is equipped with an access ramp, lift and disabled toilet with space for carers. The centrally heated open plan cabin is designed to be sociable and provide views of the countryside. She can carry up to 2 wheelchair users. The cabin also includes a kitchen complete with gas cooker, oven, grill, fridge, pans, plates and cutlery.
Safe Anchor Lady – Maximum number of passengers – 12
A unique 54 foot broad beam boat specifically designed for wheelchair users and individuals with mobility difficulties. The boat is equipped with an access ramp, lift, disabled toilet with space for carers and shower facility. The large, centrally heated, open plan, main cabin has low level windows providing excellent views and the flexible seating means she can carry up to 6 wheelchair users. The cabin also includes a kitchen complete with gas cooker, oven, grill, fridge, pans, plates and cutlery.
All our boats are skippered by a qualified volunteer helmsman and trained crew. All volunteers have been cleared by the UK Disclosure and Barring Service.
We will be running 2 trips at 10.00-12.30 and 13.30-16.00. Each trip can hold 22 people so we will be able to take 44 people in total. We can take 8 wheelchairs per slot.
If you have a time slot you prefer, please let me know in the comments and I will do my best to accommodate.
