During the May half-term holidays last week, our Little Hiccups families hopped onto a magic carpet and flew straight into the enchanting world of Agrabah! We hosted a fantastic, high-energy Musical Theatre Workshop themed entirely around the classic story of Aladdin, focusing on the beautiful song “A Whole New World”. It was a truly magical day filled with music, rhythm, movement, and a whole lot of smiles.
Purely Child-Led, Free-Flowing Fun
At Little Hiccups, we know that every child experiences and engages with the world in their own unique way. That is why our workshop was designed to be completely free-flowing. There was absolutely no pressure to follow a rigid routine, complete specific steps, or stand perfectly in line. Instead, children were warmly encouraged to engage with the music and performance exactly as they saw fit.
Whether they were right at the front copying the choreography, spinning around with props, or choosing to watch the performance unfold from a comfortable distance, every level of participation was celebrated. It was wonderful to watch the children explore their creativity, express themselves freely, and gain confidence across the session at their own pace.
Ribbons, Turbans, and Flying Carpets!
To help bring the musical to life, the main hall was filled with an array of vibrant props, dynamic sensory items, and dress-up gear. We had colourful ribbon wands that filled the air with brilliant streaks of red, yellow, green, and blue as the children waved them to the music. Many of our young performers loved exploring the traditional themed clothing, trying on beautiful headwear like turbans and fezes, and using soft sensory scarves to simulate floating through space on a magic carpet ride.
From practising dramatic poses with their ribbon wands to building up physical confidence by trying out floor movements, balancing activities, and playful tumbles on the floor, the hall was buzzing with imagination and joy.
A Welcoming Space for Everyone: Our Adjoining Sensory & Quiet Zone
We understand that high-energy workshops and loud music can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming for children with additional needs. To ensure our event was fully accessible and stress-free, we set up a dedicated quiet space in an adjoining room right next to the main hall.
This room acted as a perfect safe haven, fully equipped with desks and chairs containing colouring activities, sensory toys, interactive boards, and tactile games. Families could seamlessly slip away whenever a child needed a break to decompress and regulate, before heading back into the main musical theatre space whenever they felt ready. Having this free-flowing access between the two spaces meant that everyone could get the very most out of their day.
A Huge Thank You!
We want to extend a massive thank you to our incredible session leader, Kathleen, who brought so much passion and energy to Agrabah, and of course, to all our amazing Little Hiccups families who came along to sing, dance, play, and make memories together. Seeing the children support one another, share props, and laugh together is exactly why we love running these holiday sessions.
