Cai lives with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and scoliosis, which causes pain, reduced flexibility, and limits his physical abilities. He uses a manual wheelchair and was beginning to lose milestones such as rolling over. His condition also places him at risk of multiple spinal surgeries, which could affect his participation in a clinical trial that has been life-changing for him.
Cai’s physical limitations made traditional exercise impossible, and maintaining flexibility was critical to delaying surgery and preserving his eligibility for the trial. His family needed an intervention that could improve strength, reduce pain, and support his mental well-being.
Little Hiccups provided hydrotherapy sessions—a safe, structured activity offering physical exercise and social interaction. For Cai, these sessions felt like fun rather than medical treatment, giving him a sense of independence and achievement.
The results have been transformative:
- Pain Reduction: Hydrotherapy eased pain from contractures in Cai’s legs.
- Improved Strength: He gained arm strength, allowing him to self-propel his wheelchair further.
- Enhanced Flexibility: Significant improvement in spinal flexibility and rotation, helping delay surgery and maintain trial eligibility.
- New Milestones: Cai regained the ability to roll over and learned to kick his legs in water, enabling him to engage hamstrings and quads during land-based physio—something previously thought impossible.
- Mental Well-being: Cai LOVES the sessions. He sees them as fun, looks forward to them weekly, and enjoys feeling physically tired like his peers.
- Social Development: The sessions provide a sense of community and confidence, reducing isolation.
Hannah says:
“I cannot put into words the positive impact this block of hydro sessions has had on Cai both physically and mentally. He can feel the difference in his strength and is so proud of himself.”
She adds:
“I can honestly say he would not be doing as well physically, mentally, or socially without you!”
Hannah is eager for more sessions and strongly recommends hydrotherapy to other families. She believes the program has bought Cai at least six extra months before surgery—a priceless outcome.
