Discover Lotherton, a country estate, historic hall and Wildlife World zoo. Our Edwardian estate is truly a great place for a family day out, with plenty to keep children and grown ups entertained!
The expansive grounds and gardens are lovely walking spots, with or without four-legged companions. Each season brings new surprises including wild garlic in the spring, a sea of colourful blooms in summer in the formal gardens and stunning autumnal colours later on in the year.
We have two playgrounds which means there’s plenty of space for running about and letting off steam, with zip wires for older children to enjoy.
Our evolving zoo, Wildlife World, is a real highlight of any visit and we’d highly recommend popping by to see the Humboldt penguins splash and swim in their pool. Other colourful characters include Arthur the tapir, our resident porcupines and a flamboyance of pink flamingos. Stop in at the shop on your way to pick up your very own version of one of our Lotherton animals.
To discover the history of the estate step inside the former home of the Gascoigne family and wander the rooms to find out more. A fascinating collection of artworks and objects fill each room and tell the story of its former residents and the community around them. The Museum is also home to an annually-changing exhibition on the first floor which links the estate to wider themes and exciting discoveries.
Our traditional stables area courtyard is where you’ll find our welcoming Stables café serving a range of lunch options, cakes and ice creams.
Please visit our dedicated Special Educational Needs and Access page for more information about how we try to make Lotherton inclusive and accessible for people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Mum to Jack, Linsay Medica (the Founder of Little Hiccups) says “Lotherton is truly special to us. When Jack goes to Lotherton, there’s a wooded area, and as we walk through, Jack can hear all the leaves blowing and rustling, and the crunchy leaves on the ground. The mosaic captures these words beautifully, highlighting just how much we cherish our time there.”

Due to the historic nature of the hall and its displays, larger motorised wheelchairs and scooters cannot navigate the visitor route, so these aids are not permitted. Light wheelchairs are available to borrow for use in the house. Please note that we are only able to accommodate one wheelchair at a time upstairs due to our evacuation procedures. We have a covered buggy park next to the entrance of the house.
A proportion of the museum is accessible.
There is a lift to the first floor which provides access to the Fashion Galleries and three other rooms. A further two rooms and two bathrooms are only accessible via a chair lift.
The School Room, used by pre-booked groups, is inaccessible to wheelchair users but an alternative can be offered. Please discuss any access needs with the Learning and Access Officer when booking your visit. Notice is required in advance of your visit to ensure we can offer an alternative on the day.
There is seating around the museum including folding seats, which are available for visitors to use.
Wildlife World
Wildlife World entrance is accessible via a wooden boardwalk and through the gift shop.
Immediately outside of the gift shop there is an upwards slope on a gravel path.
There are a number of push/pull gates and ropes to prevent the animals from leaving their dedicated enclosure areas.
There are gravel paths around Wildlife World.
The Nocturnal House is on a slope and is accessible through two sets of plastic screen curtains. It is purposely kept dark during visiting hours for the nocturnal species in this enclosure.
Grounds and Gardens
The majority of the grounds and gardens are accessible. Due to its historic design, the Edwardian Garden is not fully accessible to wheelchair users, but can be viewed from vantage points.
Manual and push wheelchairs may struggle on some of the gravel areas.
The courtyard and Stables Café are fully accessible.
During the continued maintenance of the Hall, there is limited mobility access to the rooms available to visitors. The Fashion Galleries and bedrooms are the main areas currently open which are accessed via stairs or passenger lift and chair lift.
Due to our health and safety and evacuation procedures those with mobility needs may be asked to wait until space in these areas can safely be accommodated. If you have any concerns or queries, please contact us ahead of your visit.
