We try to do a range of activities for our Family Fun Days and we are constantly striving to achieve the #NoLimits ethos that Little Hiccups lives by. Its important to remember that #NoLimits can mean different things to different families however. For some it is the extreme events: the indoor skydiving, the skiing, the wall climbing. But can you imagine having a child that struggles with sensory processing. That has meltdowns under fluorescent lights.  That can’t cope with loud noises. Or maybe they don’t get the concept of sitting down for over an hour. They don’t understand why they cannot get up and dance or talk throughout a public showing of a movie.

That’s where Little Hiccups comes in. We have so many families that never take their children to places such as the cinema for fear of disturbing other families. Or fear of being judged by people who don’t ‘ get it’.

We, on the other hand, think that it is every child’s right and privilege to live life to the fullest, to make special memories with their family together rather than having to split to do individually suited events and to have fun and above all relax! 

Its because of this that we hold events that might not necessarily be seen to achieve #NoLimits but we know it does and several of our families know it does too.

We’ve visited the Showcase De Lux Leeds Cinema for several years now and they are always accommodating and welcoming.  They open up early for us so we are the only families there when we arrive and we have our own cinema with just Little Hiccups families in. The showing has reduced lighting rather than dark for those children that are light sensitive or maybe inquisitive enough to want to wander around during the show. There are subtitles for the hearing impaired (including me and mine!) and its basically just a much more relaxed showing. There is no pressure for parents to shush their children or tell them to sit down. It does mean that the parents may not get to watch much of the show if they are following the children around but as long as they are relaxed! My favourite memory of this movie is watching children dancing along to the music. Love it! Might join in next time…

As for the movie – we went to see Abominable which was just a lovely movie and had me giggling along too. Its about a young girl discovering a Yeti on the roof of her apartment building and setting off with her two friends to embark on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family. But to do so, they must stay one step ahead of a wealthy financier and a determined zoologist who want to capture the beast for their own gain. Its funny and wise and I definitely recommend a viewing.
