Last weekend, Little Hiccups had the pleasure of immersing ourselves in the wonders of nature at Wild in the Woods Forest School in Kippax. Led by the passionate duo, Nicola and Molly from Wilderness Adventures, they offered a unique blend of outdoor education, creative play, and hands-on learning experiences.
About Wilderness Adventures
Wilderness Adventures is more than just a forest school; it’s a community hub for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Founded on the principles of the Forest School approach to learning, Nicola and Molly’s shared love for nature, hands-on learning, and art shines through in every aspect of their program. Their mission is to nurture a sense of wonder, curiosity, and respect for the natural world among children and families through engaging, nature-based activities.
The Forest School Experience
Our day at Wild in the Woods was nothing short of magical. As we arrived at the private woodland on Park Lane, Kippax, we were greeted by the sights and sounds of the forest coming alive. The session kicked off with a warm welcome and an introduction to the various activities on offer.
Children were given the freedom to explore and connect with nature through hands-on activities such as mud kitchen play, building with large loose parts, and constructing imaginative dens. Under the guidance of the Wilderness Adventures team, they delved into the sensory experience of working with clay and playdough, fostering their creativity and fine motor skills.
For those feeling adventurous, there were opportunities to learn basic tool skills and even try their hand at fire lighting (under careful supervision, of course!). Meanwhile, adults savored hot drinks and enjoyed the serene surroundings.
A Safe Haven in Nature
One of the most remarkable aspects of our experience at Wild in the Woods was the sense of safety and enclosure provided by the woodland setting. Surrounded by towering trees and the gentle rustle of leaves, children were free to explore and play with a sense of freedom and security.
We had a wonderful sunny day which had been surrounded by what feels like weeks of glum and wet weather so it was a real delight to see the sun.
Accessibility and Inclusivity
Wilderness Adventures is committed to making nature accessible to all. The woodland location boasts easy access for prams and wheelchairs along the main paths, ensuring that everyone can participate in the fun. While the woodland setting may have uneven paths, the warm hospitality and inclusive atmosphere more than make up for any physical challenges.
Conclusion
Our visit to Wild in the Woods Forest School was a resounding success, leaving both children and adults alike with cherished memories of a day spent in nature’s embrace. Little Hiccups extends heartfelt thanks to Nicola, Molly, and the entire Wilderness Adventures team for their dedication to fostering a love of nature and learning in our community.
One thing is abundantly clear: in the heart of the forest, there’s magic to be found, and at Wilderness Adventures, everyone is invited to join the adventure. Until next time, may we all continue to explore, discover, and connect with the beauty of the natural world.
We’ll be looking into an adult evening event to replicate the chilled atmosphere that we experienced!
