The Rokt Foundation, known for its commitment to inclusivity and fostering a love for climbing, hosted a memorable wall climbing event tailored for Little Hiccups families who have children with additional needs. This wasn’t just any event; it was a testament to the strength, courage, and joy that comes from facing fears and overcoming obstacles, no matter how high they seem.
A Day of Climbing
The event took place during the February half term, offering an invigorating escape for children and their families. With climbing sessions scheduled throughout the day, each an hour long, up to 12 climbers at a time were welcomed to experience the thrill of climbing. The sessions were thoughtfully designed to accommodate climbers of various ages and abilities, ensuring that every child, from the age of 5 upwards, could participate in this exhilarating activity.
The Rokt Foundation’s venue, an old factory turned climbing haven, added a unique charm to the day’s adventures. Despite the cold, the warmth of excitement and the spirit of adventure filled the air. Climbers were advised to dress in layers, a practical tip that allowed them to adjust to their exertion levels comfortably. While climbing shoes were provided, participants also had the option to wear their own trainers, ensuring everyone could climb with confidence and comfort.
Inclusivity at Its Best
What set this event apart was the Rokt Foundation’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity. The foundation ensured that children of all abilities could enjoy the thrill of climbing. For those with low mobility, a special ‘hoist’ was available, allowing them to experience the joy of climbing with the support of dedicated staff. It was a heartening sight to see children, including a child who was visually impaired, facing their fears and climbing high, supported by the fabulous staff who were there to guide, encourage, and celebrate every small victory.
The event also showcased the foundation’s new £18,000 sensory room, a space designed to stimulate, relax, and engage children with various sensory experiences. This addition highlighted the foundation’s holistic approach to wellbeing, offering a tranquil retreat where children could unwind after their climbing adventures.
Accessibility and Support
While the Rokt Foundation’s venue is an old building with its own set of challenges, including limited accessibility and no lift, efforts were made to accommodate everyone. The ground floor was made wheelchair accessible, and a disabled toilet with a removable ramp was available. Furthermore, children with less mobility were encouraged to participate, with special arrangements allowing them to climb with the aid of instructors.
Looking Forward
The event received fabulous feedback from parents, a testament to the positive impact of such inclusive and well-organized activities. The Rokt Foundation not only provided a platform for physical activity but also fostered a supportive community where children could face and overcome their fears, build confidence, and experience the joy of achieving something they might have thought impossible.
As we look forward to more events like this, it’s clear that the Rokt Foundation is not just about climbing; it’s about building a foundation of strength, courage, and community. It’s about reaching new heights, not just on the climbing walls, but in life itself.
